THE CAKE WALLAH!

Do you remember him? Everything in his box was so fresh and delish!!  Loved those "pattice" and cream rolls!  The "biscoots" were great too!

I don't recall a door to door vendor in Bombay—but there were several in Calcutta— "Olympia" was the most expensive (to be indulged in at the beginning of the month when the family coffers were replenished) and "Saldana" was the cheapest - but had the best 'pound' cake. Calcutta's  "Doran" sold Indian sweets - their burfis were to die for!  They each had distinctive street calls - "Olympia Ka Cake-Wallah!" and "Doraaan Mitahiiii"

When we lived "up country" in Allahabad, the door to door vendors also included a seller of hot, fresh jalebis! After dark, it was the turn of the ice-cream wallah - with the creamiest kulfi you could find this side of heaven!  The ice-cream was in cone-shaped metal containers, sealed with flour paste - and the kulfi-wallah rubbed tha cone between his palms to warm it up, before taking off the seal, and squeezing the contents onto our eagerly outstretched plates!

Ah....the memories!!!
